TV and radio personality Lerato Kganyago has joined hundreds of South Africans in praying for the families of the trapped miners at an abandoned mine in Langlaagte.

While reports of a rescue operation to free the miners at the abandoned mine continue to come in, Lerato Kganyago has taken to Twitter to share her sorrow at the incident.

Lerato went on to admit that footage of the miners being taken out of the mine had left her feeling "teary" and offered a prayer of strength to all those affected by the tragedy.

Lerato's pain was shared by gospel singer Winnie Mashaba, who took to her own Instagram page on Tuesday to pray for a heavenly intervention at the mine.

"My heart is not at ease today. I feel the frustration of the families of the miners who are trapped underground in Langlaagte mine...My humble prayers is, for God the provider and the giver to provide an intervention. I am an African child and the pain of my fellow African also affects me," Winnie wrote.

Reports this week claim that an unknown number of illegal miners entered an abandoned mine at George Harrison Park in Langlaagte last Wednesday.

However, when they failed to emerge, 16 more reportedly went down the next day in search for them. Since then, the illegal miners have been surfacing and trying to flee from police.

Their families have been camping on the ground above the shaft since the rescue operation began and have threatened to enter the mine if rescue operations to free the miners are not sped up.
