Mshoza and Lebo Mathosa were once the best of friends. So, when Lebo passed away in a car accident ten years ago, Mshoza was heartbroken. Not least because she was on her way to meet up with Lebo when she heard about the accident.

Opening up to IOL recently, Mshoza detailed the moments she heard about Lebo's death.

She said that the day before the accident, Lebo had phoned her to remind her of an appointment the pair had with DJ Cleo. Lebo had arranged with Cleo to create a single for her friend.

"When I woke up the next day, I was late and Lebo didn’t like late people. So I get up, I’m in a hurry and my sister is like: ‘Sonto, come listen to this,’" Mshoza said.

Mshoza heard a Lebo Mathosa song on the radio but dismissed it because she was late. Her sister insisted she stop and listen.

"I was thinking, 'me listening to Lebo on the radio is not going to help me not be late to go and meet her'. But I waited a little and heard the radio say: 'Rest in peace,"' Mshoza recounted.

She said that the world seemed to stop in that moment.

"That was the end of my world. I felt like it was just destruction. Everything stopped. But God has a different way of working with people," Mshoza added.

Just days after her death, Mshoza paid tribute to her close friend, telling Sowetan that Lebo was "a mother, a friend and a role model" to her.

She also revealed that Lebo had introduced her to drugs.

"Lebo introduced me to lesbianism and she taught me how to smoke a zol (dagga cigarette). A lot of people thought we were an item because we were very close...When people were laughing at me she took care of me. She paid my rent and for my other needs," she said.

It was a bond that Mshoza had never forgotten.

Speaking to Gareth Cliff on CliffCentral three months ago, Mshoza said that she would "always cherish" her relationship with Lebo.

"She (Lebo) was one person that would always say...'go hustle, go work, never give up'. She would say, 'go knock on doors, get a deal, do something. Don't give up,'" she said.
