Veteran singer and actor Marah Louw has opened up about the haunting memories  she has of the June 16 Soweto uprising.

Speaking to TshisaLIVE Marah said the events of that day in 1976 are etched in her mind.

"There are no good memories about June 16 1976. Every morning my family and I prayed and thanked God to be alive. Some of the most horrific images still live inside of me to this day, of seeing young and old, children lying in the streets. Blood everywhere. Family and friends lost their lives, lest we forget," she said.

Marah also expressed disappointment over the way Youth Day is celebrated today.

"One of the things that breaks my heart is the way June 16 is celebrated. I don’t understand what we are celebrating. I believe it should be a national memorial gathering around the country in remembrance of our fallen heroes. A day of prayer. Festivals and braais, are an insult to those families who lost their loved ones," she said.

She went on to salute the people who lost their lives during the fight against oppression.

Today marks the 41st anniversary of the Soweto uprising where many young lives were lost in the fight against Apartheid education policies for black student.
