Gospel mega star Rebecca Malope, who boasts a career that spans over three decades, has admitted that she did not understand what receiving an honorary doctorate meant.

The musician, who is now Dr Rebecca Malope after the University of KwaZulu-Natal and University of California awarded her the titles, told Drum she thought it meant she had to "open a surgery!"

"To be honest, I didn't understand what an honorary doctorate was at first. I thought if they gave you one, they wanted you to open a surgery! But, ah, it's a blessing," she said.

Rebecca received the honour for her contribution to the music industry.

The Ngegazi Lemvana hitmaker has over 35 albums under her belt and plenty of other accolades. She has won tons of awards including the Kora award, South African Music Awards, Metro FM Music Awards and an OKTV award for best female artist.

Rebecca, real name Batsogile Lovederia Malope, also recently received  the Lifetime Achievement Award at the SAMAs.
