All he has to say on any song is “Tellaman ohh” and you know that the song is going to be banger and he’s smooth vocals will be a big part of the reason why the song is a jam but Tellaman knows that he’s a superstar in the making and he explained why.

Tellaman said he believes his uniqueness lies in the fact that he’s not a hip-hop artist or an R&B singer but he can do both genres and others with ease without diluting the song.

“I think artists like Tshego (from Family Tree) and I stand out because of our ability to jump on a song and help to amplify it instead of it feeling like, ‘it could have been a nice hip-hop track but there’s too much singing.’ I think that is why Mayo pushed me into the spotlight because it was such a hip-hop track but my presence made it better.”

Although he only really broke into the industry around 2016, Tellaman has been hard at work for ages.

“Before Bad Hair (with Nasty C) I had dropped my first mixtape called Mind vs. Heart, then right after that I was part of the song Mayo by DJ Speedsta. Those were the releases I had before Bad Hair and before all of that I was on a Soul Candi project with Lulo Café and others.”

The singer explained to TshisaLIVE that although he’s been complimented for his standout voice among his peers in SA, he initially didn’t even have an interest in music. His heart was on soccer.

“Finding my love for singing was actually weird because my family are churchgoers so I was forced to go to church, that’s where my mom heard I could sing. Then she would make me sing all the time at home with my siblings. I wasn’t about it, I wanted to go play soccer or just be with my friends but she wouldn’t let up.”

However, his mom was obviously on to something because eventually Tellaman would find out for himself that music was his destiny.

“I started learning how to produce; it’s something that I taught myself before the music bug bit. I was making beats long before I knew I wanted to jump on them. It wasn’t serious when I started it was just for fun but I grew to love it and it lead to me realising I could sing. I then fell in love with music, the rest is history.”

Now Tellaman has been dubbed the Chris Brown of SA, a comparison he doesn’t hate because musically Chris is a superstar and one of the only artists in the world who can sing anything and feature on any song and make it a hit.

Something that Tellaman also prides himself with!

Tellaman is releasing a new single on Friday titled Crew Lit and he also has a new music video for his latest single No Sharing that has been doing the most on YouTube.
