As the increasing rate of rape in SA continues to cause a dialogue on how people can help stop rape culture, actress Khayakazi Kula has added her thoughts on the matter focusing particularly on how problematic "sleepovers" can be.

The Queen actress shared a tweet that stated she understood why most parents were opposed to their children having sleepovers. She added that as a child she didn't fully understand her mother's reasons but now as an adult it all makes sense.

"My mum was one of these parents. I remember how I used to think she's mean spirited for not allowing me to do sleepovers. One day she sat me down and made me understand why she was against it."

Khayakazi went on to explain that some of the reasons her mother gave her.

"The first thing she said was that every house has it's own spirits. She said spirits are transferable. Wena you are going to go sleep over at someone's house innocently ubuye nemimoya yalondlu, ukhule uncanyathelwe yimimoya ongayaziyo, kanti ngumoya owawuthatha kulo nantsika (then you come back with a changed behaviour and you don't realise that it is because you are carrying spirits from that house)".

The actress said one of the most important things she came to understand from her mother's reasoning was that as a parent, you don't always know what situation your child may end up in should there be someone with ulterior motives at the friend's house.

"The third thing she said is that, it's not safe to do sleepovers because there might be a 'rapey' uncle kulondlu uzibone ukwi situation ethile (at that house and then you find yourself in a certain (undesired) situation). It took me forever to get her reasoning. Nanamhlanje (but even to date) I don't like sleepovers, my friends know that," Khayakazi wrote.
