Podcast and Chill co-host Sol Phenduka has weighed in on the shooting of a businesswoman and a security boss outside a Bedfordview nursery school on Tuesday, suggesting bodyguards may be “as good as useless” if someone is after you.

Provincial police spokesperson Lt-Col Mavela Masondo said the businesswoman had  dropped off her child when she was shot inside the creche yard.

“The other suspect/s shot the owner of a private security company who had parked his car outside the creche premises. It is alleged the owner of the private security company was escorting the businesswoman at the time of the shooting,” Masondo said.

The incident sparked a conversation around personal protection after several public shootings, including the death of rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes two weeks ago.

Taking to social media, Sol claimed the latest shootings show “bodyguards are as good as useless”.

“When people want you out it's really impossible for a bodyguard to save you”.

While some agreed with Sol, others said personal security can help in some situations if done right.

AKA was assassinated outside a popular Florida Road, Durban restaurant earlier this month by two gunmen. Celebrity chef and author Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane was also killed in the shooting. The suspects have not been apprehended.

Anwar “Dogg” Khan, who took care of AKA's security in Durban for the past eight years, told the Sunday Times the bodyguard assigned to the rapper on the night of his death did not have a “fighting chance” against the killers.

“The protector did not have a fighting chance because the one guy was shooting at him while the other guy was shooting at AKA, and you had people running like crazy.

“He was not injured but three shots were fired directly at him from less than 5m and the shooter missed. If he hadn’t dived into a vehicle for cover, that [shooter] would have got him,” Khan said.
