The family of Itumeleng “Vusi Ma R5" Mosoeu is happy to have finally restored his gravesite after it was vandalised.
Images of ashes and big rocks on top of the popular Bacardi musician's burial site circulated on social media in March, weeks after he was laid to rest at Odi Cemetery in Mabopane. He died on January 13.
“It was difficult because it was not long after we buried him that tragic thing happened. We don't even have answers as to who did that, we wondered whether taking his life was not enough for them. It hurt,” Ma R5's brother Koketso “DJ Cooper” Mosoeu told TshisaLIVE.
While Ma R5's murder is still under investigation, his family, friends, and community members commemorated his birthday by unveiling his new tombstone on May 28.
“Everything went well. There were no fights, there was no chaos, or anything to do with guns and everyone felt safe because the police were there. We had asked them to be present at the event. The community was also helpful, they even helped to clean up after the unveiling.”
His family is still trying to come to terms with Ma R5's death but is determined to continue his legacy.
Koketso plans to release a song in his honour.
“I would have put out music but for the past few months, I was going through a lot. At that time I was trying to put food on the table for my family and make sure the children and his wife are also well taken care of.
“We used to perform together. He was an artist, I was a DJ. I've told myself that wherever he left I need to carry on. I need to carry his legacy. I have a tribute song prepared along with two other songs.”
