Maps Maponyane could not hide the excitement when he opened up about his film Courting Anathi.

The romcom flick premiered on June 2 on Viu on-demand platform.

“My film, that I was fortunate to be an executive producer of, is directed by Akin Omotoso and has an incredible cast. It's a romance/comedy that's based in the corporate world. It's a beautiful story and journey that came out on Viu last week,” he told TshisaLIVE.

Maps sang the praises of director and filmmaker Akin, who in 2022 released his sports drama Rise on Disney.

“He is a phenomenal man, an incredible human, wonderfully rounded, spectacularly talented. I was fortunate that he directed the first film Tell Me Sweet Something I acted in and we've stayed close since then. I call him coach because everything he does or says I try to learn from as much as possible and that's how our relationship grew to producing this film.

“From learning from him that was an opportunity to be able to create this, anything he is a part of, I'm just like take all my money. I think he is one of those once-in-a-generation type of directors, especially after doing Hollywood films like Rise, where he did the biopic story on Giannis, Thanasis and Kostas Antetokounmpo and how well that did on Disney.

“It's phenomenal that I get the opportunity to work with people such as him and that's something I want to continue to make the most of and learn from as much as possible.”

The media personality was recently named as the host of The Picture Perfect, a celebrity reality show heading to e.tv on July 23.

“They can expect a lot of high energy, a lot of excitement, laughter and a lot of spice. There's good relationships but there's also a lot of competitiveness between them, but there's always a lot of love in the room between them too and it makes it really fun for the show. You'll see a lot of beautiful growth and go on a journey with them and see all the ups and downs.”

Maps hosted Mzansi Magic's Mzansi Icons, a show that celebrated and honoured living legends in different industries.

On whether season 2 was on the cards, he said viewers would have to wait and see.

“We will see what happens, there is talk around it but everything has to line up. That was definitely one of the most beautiful things I've been a part of and hopefully we can make it work.”

He reflected on hosting the show that saw him interviewing the likes of Khuli Chana, Kabelo Mabalane and sports executive Jessica Motaung.

“I think my take away from that experience is it's a journey and it's important to take in every moment of that journey and ensure you recognise and allow yourself to enjoy those moments, not just see it as something that's fleeting, and really experience it and be as present as possible while you are going through what you are going through.

“It's a beautiful to see how so many of those guests, if not all of them, strove for excellence and how things haven't always worked out for all of them — how everyone's got a story.”
