POLL | Do you believe it’s too soon for gigs to ‘cancel’ Kelly Khumalo?
Two gigs have dropped singer Kelly Khumalo during the Senzo Meyiwa's murder trial.
Organisers of the Tribute To Women concert dropped the Empini hit maker and former girlfriend of Meyiwa, and the Maseru Jazz Festival's organisers followed suit.
The festival, set to take place on September 24 at Maseru Park and Entertainment in Bokone, Mahikeng, included the singer in a star-studded line-up featuring Nathi and Mafikizolo, among others.
“As Maseru Park we inform you we have seen comments on social media about one of our guest performers and we need to inform our public and society we are putting Kelly Khumalo on hold.
“We respect the professionalism of the legal team in the processes. The management of Maseru Park, in the interest of our jazz festival, have taken the decision to relieve Kelly Khumalo of the obligation to perform at our festival and we acknowledge she is not guilty until proven so.”
The Tribute To Women concert also issued a statement confirming they were removing her from the line-up, saying: “We have noted, with concern, comments on social media platforms and calls from many patrons of our festival. We respect the legal processes and wish to indicate Ms Kelly Khumalo is innocent until proven otherwise.
“However, in the interest of safeguarding our festival, management has taken the decision to relieve Ms Khumalo of her obligations to perform at our festival this year to afford her and her team the time they require to deal with the issues emanating from the current court proceedings.”
