AfroSoul singer Thandeka Zulu's community members are among the people left destitute after their houses were destroyed by heavy rain, strong wind and hail in parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

Seven people died.

A tornado ripped through Tongaat in KwaZulu-Natal, causing extensive damage to homes and schools. It left more than a thousand families homeless.

Tongaat-born Thandeka told TshisaLIVE she's horrified by what transpired in Tongaat. The painful part was seeing people picking up what they could save from the rubble.

“People's belongings have been swept away by this tornado, hence I've decided to stop doing our group's (AfroSoul) rehearsals and come home to see the extent of the damage,” she said.
