Sikhumbuzo “Midnight Uzo” Mazibuko has released her highly anticipated single titled Hayi and featuring Durban kwaito royalty Professor.
The Afro-house single encapsulates the use of auxiliary sounds, emotive lyrics and a jazzy melody.
“Hayi is essentially a love song about longing to see someone dear to me. People can interpret it how they wish in their own lives. It can be the longing to see a partner, family or friend, but it is essentially a song of longing for love,” Midnight Uzo told TshisaLIVE.
The singer, songwriter and trombone player has been able to break away from being boxed under one genre.
She marks working with Professor as an achievement from her bucket list.
“Having Professor bring his unique kwaito voice to the song made a big difference. The song is of international sound, and his lyrical prowess made it relatable to home.”
Midnight Uzo, former ANC Women's League president Bathabile Dlamini's daughter, launched her music career in 2023 with the release of her six-track EP New Genesis, fusion of pop funk and Afro-pop.
From age nine she knew she wanted to pursue a career in music.
“It's kind of hard to try and push through to make a name for yourself, but my mother has been very supportive of my career choice and I'm so grateful to her for it. What she does and what she did is difficult and I knew that was not the space for me.
“My grandfather was a conductor and my grandmother played the organ. I get my voice from my mom. She's also alto. I come from a very musical family.”
