TshisaLIVE spoke to deep house DJ Malankane, aka Reginald Makofane, a Pretoria-based DJ who has been in the industry for two decades and has witnessed the music scene evolve over the years. Makofane is also a producer.
What led you to be a DJ and enter deep house?
I’d go to my friend's house to record music. We'd go to bashes and stokvels to DJ because that was how we started earning ourselves a living and gaining opportunities to play at nightclubs. I used to play cassettes in high school and that’s how I fell in love with deep house. This music tells a story and is also a stress reliever.
How many compilations have you released, who did you work with and what have you learnt from the compilation era?
I have released four compilations: Deep House Chronicles Pretoria; Selektor Series Pretoria; Allstar DJs; Houseblendz. I worked with Soul Candi and House Afrika and I learnt a lot about compiling and sequencing.
What's your current album and what does it signify?
I’m releasing House Blendz EP and it’s about soulful house from where it started back in the days.
What are your thoughts on deep house in South Africa?
It’s going in the right direction, especially with the events now happening.
How did you become a Diesel clothing ambassador?
I used to be a customer and we started doing Denim Fridays at the shop, myself and Oscar Mbo.
Besides music what are you busy with?
Working with Multiracial Records, helping students become DJs and producers.
