The A-list explainer: Durban July 2024

Durban welcomed an estimated 45,000 visitors for this year's main Durban July event.

From the grandstands, visitors accessed the marquee village via a tunnel beneath the course. There were 20 VIP marquees, down from more than 30 in 2017.

The theme for this year's July was “Ride the Wave”. The event is known for its high fashion, and TimesLIVE spoke to celebrities LootLove, Lerato Kganyago, Kenny Kunene and others to find out who they were wearing and their thoughts about the theme.

KB Motsilanyane's national anthem rendition ignites spirit of unity

Singer Keabetswe “KB” Motsilanyane set a powerful tone at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday with her “incredible” rendition of the national anthem before the Springboks went on to secure a solid 27-20 victory over Ireland.

Motsilanyane is a South African actress and songstress known for her soulful voice with hit songs such as O a lla and her roles in popular soapies Backstage, Rhythm City and 7de Laan.

Kwaito artists call for support for Mapaputsi after reports of ill health

Those close to kwaito musician Sandile “Mapaputsi” Ngwenya have expressed concern about his health.

A musician, who asked to remain anonymous, told TshisaLIVE artists were attempting to support Mapaputsi and his family.

“We, as artists, want to show support for Mapaputsi and his family. However, we understood his family is protecting his privacy,” he said as he made attempts to visit the My Love artist after hearing about his condition.

Early this week DJ Tira took to his social media page to document the revamping of his studio, posting: “God we trust, Afro studio revamped. Ready to create more magic with amazing talent.”

MacG, Mohale among eight creatives paid more than others in Covid-19 relief

While most artists and sports professionals were paid on average between R10,000 and R20,000 in relief funds during South Africa's two-year Covid-19 restrictions, some were paid more.

The Balobedu royal family has failed in its bid to interdict MultiChoice from airing the series Queen Modjadji.

On Tuesday Queen Masalanabo Modjadji VII, the Balobedu royal family and the Balobedu Royal Council approached the Pretoria high court on an urgent basis to interdict the broadcasting of the series.
