Meet DJ TeeJay, one of South Africa's youngest house DJs.
DJ TeeJay — whose real name is Tumelo Hlompho Merementsi — from Kuruman in the Northern Cape, is in grade 4 at Laerskool Seodin. He exhibits skills far beyond his age.
Speaking to TshisaLIVE, he said he became interested in DJing when he was five years old, but only started on the decks the following year.
DJ TeeJay’s talent has his parents Tlale and Mavino Merementsi beaming with pride.
“We support his interest in becoming a DJ. He loves music and we don’t know how far it will take him. However, there’s no pressure on him. It’s about him all the way,” Tlale said.
The young DJ is inspired by DJ Black Coffee, Glenzito, Ralf Gum, DJ Christos and Shimza. He said about how it all started: “The place is called Biker’s Joint. I was five when I started chilling with the resident DJs during the day. I somehow persuaded Art Keith [Tumisang Sepalamelo] to teach me to play and surprised everyone when he allowed me to do that one afternoon. Even my parents were amazed.”
DJ TeeJay explained how he juggles schoolwork and his DJing: “There aren’t gigs during the week. If I have a gig during the weekend, normally Saturdays, I go to play and come back to my other responsibilities. On Fridays I do my homework, rest and then get to practise.
“I love DJing, I love music. Practising doesn’t feel like work or chores. I enjoy it.”
