Mourners gathered at the GNF Durban station on Thursday afternoon for a memorial service in honour of the late Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule.

The service was attended by family, friends, colleagues from UkhoziFM, and listeners who had been touched by her ministry.

Mbokazi was celebrated for her unwavering faith and her ability to connect with people through the airwaves. The atmosphere was one of sorrow and gratitude as speakers shared personal stories of how Mbokazi-Nkambule had affected their lives.

Speakers included officials from the KwaZulu-Natal government, the eThekwini municipality, mayor Mxolisi Kaunda and sport, arts and culture deputy minister Peace Mabe, Hashi Elimhlophe, DJ Tira, Dumi Mkokstad, Sipho Makhabane and many more.

Bishop ND Nhlapo offered words of support to the families. Gospel artists Unathi Sithole, Ntokozo Ngongoma, Sgwili & Babo, and Sphumele Mbambo are just some of the artists who performed at the memorial.

The Crown Gospel Music Awards founder passed away early on Monday morning after battling lung cancer.

Bishop Mpendulo Nkambule shared a statement announcing her death. “It’s with a heavy heart that we, the Nkambule and Mbokazi family, announce the passing of our beloved Ms Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule, founder of Crown Gospel Music Awards & Ukhozi FM radio personality,” read the statement.

Even though the entrepreneur was diagnosed with lung cancer in May, her illness became apparent in April.

Mbokazi will be laid to rest on Saturday. The service begins at the Durban ICC then proceeds to Mariannhill cemetery in Pinetown.
