Former Ukhozi FM presenter Ngizwe Mchunu has given the organiser of the Impucuzeko Maskandi Festival, Xolani Mcineka, an ultimatum to pay performers or face maskandi artists boycotting his events.

This comes after Xolani hosted the festival at the People's Park at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. Maskandi artists performed, but the event allegedly ended with drama as sources alleged most artists were not paid and some were told not to expect payment.

“What Impucuzeko did is degrade artists. This is the reason artists die with no money for their burials. How can you organise a big event at an expensive venue with partnered sponsors but you don't have money to pay people who pull the crowd to your event. They're unprofessional,” claimed a source.

Another source said: “uXolani is opportunistic. He took advantage of artists' generosity and they trusted him to do the right thing and pay them for their services rendered. Some artists decided to approach Ngizwe Mchunu to help them resolve the issue. Some artists came from as far as Phongolo and Manguzi to perform at the event, only to go back to their homes with empty pockets.”

When contacted by TshisaLIVE, Ngizwe confirmed giving Xolani an ultimatum to pay the artists. He said if they are not paid he will open a case and tell maskandi artists to boycott Xolani's events.

“They are using the platform for their own enrichment, and that's exploitation. I was chosen by our majesty the king to be president of amabhinca (industry) and to make sure amabhinca is not exploited..

“I've given him seven days to pay all the artists their booking fees. How can you say you don't have money but 30,000 fans paid R150 each and gathered at your event? It's not something new as there are artists who have been waiting to get paid for three years. If he doesn't meet the seven days, I'll be heading to the police station to lay a case because this is exploitation”.

Efforts to reach Xolani were not successful as he did not respond to text messages and phone calls.
