Playwright Mapule Mchunu's musical has attracted prominent figures. Mchunu hosted the play Abahlobisi Bomhlaba at the Durban Playhouse at the weekend.

Speaking to TshisaLIVE, Mchunu said she used an experience as simple as doing her shopping from street vendors and the moments this provided for inspiration.

The play attracted personalities such as former KwaZulu-Natal premier Nomusa Dube, while other guests included Khaya Ngema, Thandekile Mqadi and Cry Ncube.

“Being a presenter on two community radio stations — Imbokodo FM, where I discovered my presenting skills, and Inanda FM as a presenter, sales and marketing manager — and later becoming producer of an award-winning show paved the way for me to host such a magnificent play which we showcased last week at the Playhouse,” she said.

“It was an honour to be with the first woman KZN premier Nomusa Dube and it was her birthday but she chose to share the day with us. The storyline also talks about women who made a mark and she is one of those women.”

Mchunu has been involved in productions such as eHostela S3, Umkhokha S1, Uzalo S9, Gomora, Imbewu and Durban Gen, as well as her work on the stage.
