Khanyisa Bunu reflects on her illustrious career in comedy

Khanyisa is set to bring her comedic talent to The F Show, a hilarious stand-up comedy show with Mpho Popps and Vafa Naraghi that makes light of the many complexities that come with being South African.

From the absurdity of the cost of groceries to the tenacity of side hustle culture, the show is a reflection of the ups and downs, ins and outs of surviving daily in South Africa.

Ahead of her performance, Khanyisa reflects on her career so far and shares why fans shouldn’t miss The F Show.

You’ve had an incredible career in the local comedy space so far. What is it about your style of comedy that sets you apart?

Thank you so much, but I believe my journey has just begun and there is so much yet to be accomplished. I think I deliver smart and clean humour that doesn't just make people laugh but gives them something to think about. I think that sets me apart.⁠

How does a joke come together for you? Do you test it anywhere?

I honestly don't have a small audience of testing my jokes, I test them in live audiences. Unbelievable, right? I normally introduce one or two new jokes together with my old tested ones during my performances so that even if they do not work out I still do well.

⁠Some of your most memorable moments on stage?

Definitely the multiple standing ovations I normally get after my performances. There's also a moment that stands out when I was at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown last year when I had to get off stage just a minute or so after being on stage because my show was sold out and there were people causing a commotion outside wanting to get in. That was just too amazing for me.⁠

What made you fall in love with comedy?

I used to make my family, friends and colleagues laugh for free, so I was like, ‘Wouldn't it be nice if I could get paid for this?’ The rest was history.

What is one thing no one knows about a career in comedy?

Comedy is not a smooth ride. Like any career, there are good days and bad days. Bad days can be hard, very hard.

You’re set to star in The F Show alongside Mpho Popps and Vafa Naraghi. What made you decide to join this hilarious line-up and tell jokes about the cost of living in South Africa?

As an entrepreneur myself the subject is close to my heart. Being a former teacher it feels like getting another opportunity to educate but this time in a relaxed and fun manner.

⁠What can people expect from your set during The F Show?

They must expect humour, fun and some realisations. It's going to be mad fun but fans will walk away with some food for thought too. The F-Show will take place at Jozi’s Theatre on the Square from September 13-15. The doors open at 7pm for the Friday and Saturday shows, and at 3pm on Sunday, September 15. Tickets are R150 and the event is for anyone looking to enjoy an evening of top-tier comedy in the heart of Joburg.
