Actress Thandi Matlaila is set to compete in a Cape Town marathon to raise funds for Run Alex Club in Alexandra.

Thandi is popularly known for her acting roles on Tshisa, Rhythm City and Lingashoni.

The NPO Thandokazi Foundation was formed in 2022 to keep youngsters off the streets and on the road to success. It helps raise funds for young men and women who are struggling to acquire the gear and resources needed to participate in athletics at regional and national levels.

Speaking to TshisaLIVE, Thandi said with her passion for giving back, she aims to show gentle love to the less fortunate.

“The foundation aims to empower and develop youth through sports participation, development and self-awareness. These pillars sum up my holistic wellness approach to life. This year I will run the annual Cape Town Marathon to raise funds for Run Alex Club, an NGO based in Johannesburg,” she said.

: “The Thandokazi Foundation aims to provide essential sporting gear, training and financial support. I'm hoping the initiative will empower young athletes to reach their full potential and compete on larger stages. Some athletes make a lot of money from races but they don't know how to manage it.

“Like acting, their income is seasonal and they don’t know how to make sure it stretches out through all the seasons. My dad, who is in finance, ensured I never get excited about the big cheques as they sometimes need to last me longer than normal.”

Thandi said her goal is to boost confidence by providing running apparel, mainly running shoes and sports bras.

“Many young athletes participate in the CGA cross-country league, often running barefoot or in inadequate footwear and worn-out shorts. By addressing these needs, my aim is to ensure every athlete can compete comfortably and confidently.”
