Music group Skeem Nation are on a mission to leave their mark in the music scene.
The group of five, Tylon Taylor aka Refilwe Phillip Lithule, Tpk Trapmash aka Tshepo Kgafela, The Pro Twins aka Thabo Ashley Sibeko and Thabang Ashbey Sibeko, and NJ aka Njabulo Nzimande, came together earlier this year to record their debut single.
Last week Skeem Nation wrapped their music video shoot for Lost alongside Themba Lukhele and Sylvester Mofokeng.
This week TshisaLIVE caught up with the group.
1. What sparked your interest in hip-hop, and who are your biggest influences?
Our interest in hip-hop was sparked by growing up in townships like Alexandra and Katlehong, surrounded by the vibrant culture and stories of resilience. We draw inspiration from local legends like Your Quest and Katlehong K1.
2. Can you share your backstory and how it shapes your music?
Our backstory is one of diversity and shared passion. We come from different backgrounds and experiences but are united by our love for music and desire to represent South African stories.
3. How does your hometown/city impact your lyrics and sound?
Our hometowns greatly impact our lyrics, with Alex's energy and Katlehong's flair fuelling our creativity. We draw from personal experiences and observations to craft messages that resonate with our audience.
How do you balance lyrical depth with catchiness and commercial appeal?
By focusing on authentic storytelling and memorable hooks. Our music is a reflection of our experiences and the world around us.
Can you walk us through your production process, from beat selection to final mixing?
Our process involves collaboration, beat selection, writing, recording and mixing. We incorporate local elements and live instrumentation to create a unique sound.
What's been the highlight of your career so far?
Collaborating with Skeem GP Foundation and amplifying stories like Sylvester's through our music. We're grateful for the opportunity to share our art.
How do you navigate the ever-changing music industry landscape?
By staying true to our vision and adapting to new trends. Our focus is on building a loyal fan base and creating music that resonates beyond borders.
What advice would you give aspiring rappers trying to break in?
Stay authentic, hone your craft, and engage with your community. Build a strong team and stay true to your vision.
How do you manage fame, social media and personal relationships?
Managing fame and social media is a challenge. We prioritise our relationships and mental health by setting boundaries and focusing on our passion for music.
What social issues or causes do you feel strongly about addressing in your music?
We're passionate about issues like redemption, resilience and township empowerment. Our music sparks meaningful conversations and inspires change.
How do you prioritise mental and physical health in the midst of a demanding career?
It is crucial. We make time for self-care, exercise and mindfulness to maintain our wellbeing amid the demands of our career.
What can fans expect from your upcoming projects?
More authentic, storytelling-driven music that showcases our growth and continued commitment to amplifying important narratives. We're proud to represent South Africa and inspire a new generation of artists.
