3. Dune: Prophecy

One of the most anticipated HBO series of 2024, this prequel is set 10,000 years before the events of the Dune film franchise.

Inspired by the novel Sisterhood of Dune, written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson, Dune: Prophecy takes us inside the founding of the Bene Gesserit, the sect that paved the way for Paul Atreides to take control of Arrakis in Dune.

The story follows two Harkonnen sisters, played by Emily Watson (Chernobyl) and Olivia Williams (Funny Woman).

4. The Penguin

Colin Farrell gives a career-best performance as one of Batman’s greatest villain characters, Oz Cobb, aka the Penguin, who makes a play to seize the reins of Gotham’s crime world. The series is one week after the events of the 2022 movie, The Batman.

The Penguin has a 94% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, an intriguing storyline and a generous dose of plot twists and surprises.

5. Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist

In one of the best-reviewed series of 2024, Don Cheadle wades through the facts and lies to figure out whether “Chicken Man” Williams (Kevin Hart) and his girlfriend Barbara (Taraji P. Henson) shook down guests, including the “Black Godfather” (Samuel L. Jackson) at a Muhammad Ali boxing match after-party. Expect ’70s glamour and a daring heist.

6. The Fall Guy 

This irresistibly fun action movie stars Ryan Gosling (Barbie) as a former stuntman who is pulled back into the game when the star of a mega-budget studio movie — directed by his ex, Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer) — goes missing. Now he has to jump off buildings and dodge down alleyways for real.

7. The Office (Season 1-9)

Showmax is home to the ultimate comfort viewing comedy, including all nine seasons of The Office. Set in a mid-size paper company led by the world’s best boss (at least according to his coffee cup), Michael Scott (Steve Carrell), this American version of workplace mockumentary The Office won five Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series.

Showmax and kykNET are now collaborating on an Afrikaans version of The Office, which is set to start production in 2025.
