Comedian and content creator Kevin Fraser takes a sho’t left to iSaturn in his new show Imagination, but not without his beloved Mzansi choms.
Known for poking fun at SA stereotypes, the viral social media star will be at the Guild Theatre on December 6, promising a stand-up routine of futuristic satire and local flavour, with some interpretive dance thrown in for the gees.
The Imagination Tour opens in Johannesburg on Friday before heading to Pretoria, East London, Gqeberha, Durban and Cape Town in December.
Last in the metro with the globally acclaimed Africa is a Feeling tour in 2023, Fraser said he was excited to return to East London.
“It was a huge success and left a real mark on my soul.
“The warmth and energy of the audience were unforgettable, and I’m looking forward to reconnecting with the people of East London, bringing new laughs and soaking in the vibe at the Guild Theatre again.
“My imagination has been running wild this year. After taking the soulful feeling of Africa around the world, my creative sparks have ignited something new.
“The sparks have laid the foundation for fresh comedy, delivering everything you’ve come to love but with a bright, renewed twist.
“Life is meant to be laughed at, so join me as I poke fun at daily struggles, life’s quirks and a future that seems as uncertain as ever, all wrapped in a fresh burst of satire.”
Fraser had a successful career as a DJ and events co-ordinator before he moved to Australia in 2014.
He then shifted his talents to social media, making viral videos on the experiences of ex-pats abroad through the guise of stereotypical South African personas in 2015.
He has broken the one-million view mark with one of his famous South African personas in The Melbourne Train Ride and Honourable Teletubbies and has more than 300,000 followers on Facebook.
“My characters come from everyday life. I’m like a sponge, constantly soaking up situations, observing mannerisms and finding quirks wherever I go.
“My travels and interactions inspire my work, and the Eastern Cape’s unique personalities have definitely found their way into some of my characters.
“While art reflecting life can sometimes hit close to home, my intention is always to celebrate the nuances with humour and heart, not to offend,” he said.
This includes city “Karens”, domestic workers on tea break, taxi drivers, Cape Town hipsters, Afrikaans repairmen, SA drivers and school teens.
“The dance elements in my show are an improvisational blend of kwaito and funk, used as a form of physical comedy to elevate the performance.
“It’s not formal like ballet or contemporary but more spontaneous and playful. However, in terms of using my Imagination, perhaps we could throw in a pirouette or two.”
After the SA leg, Fraser takes Imagination to Dubai and Doha in January and through Europe in February 2025.
