Mr Dutch, real name Bright Ukpabi, has released his highly anticipated new single Dodorima featuring the Grammy-winning Soweto Gospel Choir and rising star Nigerian vocalist Raybekah.
This single, which blends afrobeat and gospel elements, marks the first release from Mr Dutch's debut album They Thought I Was Done, set to drop later this year.
Dodorima, drawn from Nigeria's rich linguistic heritage, carries a dual meaning in Igbo and Edo, symbolising gratitude and honesty, intelligence and hard work.
“Dodorima is my story of perseverance and faith. It’s about those moments when I had to hold on to my love for music, even when others doubted me. From life-altering experiences to countless challenges, this song is my way of saying ‘thank you’ to God, to my craft and to my supporters,” he told TshisaLIVE.
The choir's transcendent harmonies and Raybekah's mellifluous vocals perfectly complement Mr Dutch's soulful delivery.
“Working on the song is a symbol of unity for Africanism — joining Nigeria and South Africa. The song also represents gratitude and we are grateful for the journey we have embarked on,” the Soweto Gospel Choir said.
“Working with the Soweto Gospel Choir was incredible. It reminded me of my early days in church as a drummer collaborating with the choir. Their level of professionalism and talent is unmatched. When I shared my vision for Dodorima they immediately understood and brought it to life. Watching them perform, harmonising across alto, soprano, tenor and bass, was nothing short of magical. They didn’t just add their voices, they infused the song with spiritual power, making it more profound and impactful,” Mr Dutch added.
“The Soweto Gospel Choir has a reputation for their spiritually moving sound and ability to stay true to Pan-African cultural roots. Since Dodorima is a song of gratitude to God, I needed a choir that could bring authenticity and depth. Their global appeal and strong cultural presence also made them the perfect fit to help Dodorima cross borders and resonate with Africans worldwide.”
