Singer Smama is starting the new year on a high note with the release of his latest single, Ndenzel'Umama, a deeply personal tribute to his 69-year-old mother, Thembeka.
The song is a soulful and emotional ode to Smama's mother, who raised him and his two siblings as a single parent. He reflects on his mother's experiences, sacrifices and unwavering dedication to her children, and how these have shaped his life and perspective.
“I wanted to honour my mother's strength, resilience and selflessness. My mother is my hero and I aspire to be like her, to survive and thrive regardless of the challenges life throws our way,” he told TshisaLIVE.
“I was raised by a single mother. My father was never in the picture. I only got to meet my father when I was in grade 11. I knew of my dad but I never had a relationship with him. Even after I met him once, the relationship never took off. When I wanted to rekindle our relationship when he was older, unfortunately he had passed away.”
Smama, hailing from Eastern Cape, has a unique perspective on the healing power of music with his unique blend of Afrosoul, gospel and adult contemporary styles and heartfelt lyrics.
“One thing I have in common with music and medicine is both are about healing. With music, I get to the parts that as a doctor I can’t, the human soul. I believe this song will do that.”
Smama has made it his mission to cement his name in the music industry for 2025. Over the years he has a Sama30 nomination under his belt for his album Isipho and has been making strides as a song writer.
He has written for many artists in the industry, including the late gospel star Lundi Tyamara.
“I learned a lot from him. He respected his craft. I also learned a lot from his respect for other artists. He always wanted to uplift other artists. He was very passionate about his music and he was very loving and giving.”
Ndenzel'Umama is the first single from Smama's upcoming album, which is slated for release later this year.
