DJ Twitty has come out guns blazing to defend gqom.

This comes after DJ Twitty, whose real name is Philani Khuzwayo, was hosted on a Durban Network podcast where he gave his insights on the evolution of music in South Africa.

DJ Twitty told TshisaLIVE that he's still keeping his sentiment about the various genres having time frames, and especially with the youth, but there are sounds without a time frame which go along with the tribe one belongs to.

“For example, we are Nguni people — people who love to dance — so gqom is a drum and South Africa is dominated by amapiano. The fact is there are parts were gqom will dominate more than amapiano, like Eastern Cape and KZN. So, amapiano dominates at the moment, like kwaito was overpowered by house music and house music was over powered by Durban kwaito. Then gqom came along and now we've got amapiano,” he said.

DJ Twitty is gearing up for his 20 Years of Twitty album around Easter weekend.

“I'm not sure how long amapiano will last until something new wins people's hearts. But that's South Africans — they always want something new. Sound doesn't have a time frame and that's a fact, it can happen any time. I don't think gqom will ever die because of certain tribes associated with drums.”
