As the countdown to the 97th Academy Awards begins, Mzansi's thespians, radio jocks and musicians came out dressed to the nines on Wednesday for the first screening of the Oscar-nominated short film The Last Ranger at Montecasino in Johannesburg.

The film, produced by Tebogo Malope's The Star Film Company, directed by Cindy Lee and co-produced by Anele Mdoda, stars Avumile Qongqo and Liyabona Mroqoza. It has been nominated for best live-action short film at the Academy Awards, which take place in Los Angeles on March 3.

"We were so sure about this short film that I called every network and told them to watch it. I'm not saying vote for it but watch it," Anele said.

Inspired by true life events, the film showcases a gripping portrayal of rhino poaching and the conservation efforts of South African rangers.

Lion King composer Lebo Morake, who is executive producer of the film, said this was testament to how great work could come out of telling real South African stories.

"Somebody opened the door for me and that someone was South African. It was not always about money. My relationship with Anele and the film comes from that principle. Everybody has a role to play. Anele delivers and produces quality. We have to come to a point where we are about quality," he said.

"This movie is proving not every opportunity, song or anything has to be about sex, drugs, nudity and violence to be good."
