The Black Coffee Foundation raised R3.1m towards the Black Coffee Music Academy.

The foundation recently hosted a glamorous black-tie gala dinner at LUXX Venue Sandhurst, Johannesburg, in celebration of Black Coffee's birthday.

ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula, Major League DJz, Oskido, Anatii, Blxckie, Siyabonga Ngwekazi, former Miss South Africa Dr Tamaryn Green and Somizi Mhlongo were among the guests at the event.

An exclusive live auction featuring one-of-a-kind pieces held by Strauss & Co was the highlight of the evening, exceeding the foundation's goal.

The academy aims to equip young musicians with the tools, knowledge and experience to succeed globally. It will provide tertiary-level music education, covering music production, the business of music and more.

“This initiative has been a dream of mine for a long time and it’s truly incredible to see it finally come to life — starting with this very special evening, surrounded by people who believe in the power of music education,” Black Coffee said.

“I’ve always been committed to leaving the world a better place and this academy is part of that vision. It’s about building an impactful legacy that will ensure South African and African music continues to take on the global stage. Education is the foundation of growth and by investing in young minds, we are securing the future of our music and culture.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better way to celebrate my birthday.”

Reflecting on the success of the evening, Lungie Maphumulo, CEO of the Black Coffee Foundation, shared her excitement: “We are absolutely thrilled with the generosity shown tonight. Raising R3.1m means we can take the first steps in physically building the foundation of the Black Coffee Music Academy.

“This initiative is deeply personal to us because it allows the foundation to enrich the lives of young musicians who dream of becoming the next Black Coffee. We are committed to creating opportunities and shaping futures, and this is just the beginning. We are incredibly proud of the work the Black Coffee Foundation continues to do in communities across the country.

Tonight was a testament to the power of collaboration, passion and purpose. We are beyond excited to begin building the academy and to continue making a lasting difference in the lives of young artists.”

Fundraising for the Black Coffee Music Academy continues through the foundation.
