In a heartwarming gesture to commemorate her 60th birthday, music icon Yvonne Chaka Chaka has partnered with Shoprite Sixty60 to deliver essential food items to elderly residents in Soweto.

The collaboration not only celebrates her milestone birthday but also honours the community that shaped her life and career.

“I wanted to honour the people and the place that shaped me by giving back, and it is very fitting to do so in partnership with a brand like Shoprite. They’ve been a part of our community since Soweto’s first mall opened in my neighbourhood of Dobsonville three decades ago,” said Chaka Chaka.

Working with community leaders, Chaka Chaka returned to her birthplace, where she personally delivered grocery bags to 100 families in need.

The bags, packed with essential food items, were a heartfelt gift for elderly residents who have been an integral part of Soweto's history.

The event also coincides with another major milestone for the “Princess of Africa” as she celebrates 40 years since she took to the stage in Soweto for her first live performance.

In a statement, Shoprite Sixty60 explained the significance of the collaboration.

“Shoprite Sixty60 has joined hands with the legendary Yvonne Chaka Chaka to commemorate her 60th birthday with a delivery of essential food items to elderly residents of Soweto.”

The retailer's delivery service says it plans to continue expanding its on-demand grocery delivery service.

The service launched at Shoprite Protea Glen on March 20, becoming the second store in Soweto to offer the convenience of fast, efficient delivery directly to customers’ doors. This follows the success of Shoprite Sixty60 at Shoprite Jabulani, which has been running since last year.

“Shoprite Sixty60 will remain true to the supermarket’s low-price promise while reimagining the shopping experience," said Shoprite Sixty60.

It offers the same rewards on the app and at the till, with in-store prices.
