Jailed kwaito star Sipho “Brickz” Ndlovu's singing with the Leeuwkop prison choir has shot up trends lists.

Brickz is serving a 15-year sentence for raping his 16-year-old niece in 2013. He was sentenced in 2017 and this year marks his eighth year behind bars. Brickz was recently spotted singing in a gospel choir with fellow inmates at Sunninghill's Leeuwkop Correctional Centre.

Brickz is known for songs such as Sweety My Baby, Ntofotofo and Stokvel.

The video, which went viral on TikTok, sparked mixed reactions.

Some users praised the correctional services department for their rehabilitation efforts, given that the department has faced a lot of public scrutiny in past years.

Some commented that Brickz appeared to be enjoying himself since he joined the prison choir in 2019. Others questioned the sincerity of his transformation, with some suggesting it was a public relations stunt aimed at securing early parole.

Despite maintaining his innocence, Brickz remains incarcerated and will be eligible for parole consideration after serving half his sentence.

Department spokesperson Logan Maistry said Brickz will not yet be released on parole.

“The inmate will only be eligible for parole consideration after serving the minimum requisite detention period.”
