The Editor’s Choice playlist, a special collaboration between TimesLIVE editor Makhudu Sefara and Gallo Curated, is a unique mix of van tuka classics, rare tracks from the Gallo vault and brand-new releases from The Music Arena family.
In 2007, when TimesLIVE launched as The Times, the media and music landscape was different. Gallo Music International was promoting Simphiwe Dana’s music in Germany, while locally, the label was simultaneously releasing works by artists such as Patricia Majalisa, Irene Mawela, En Vogue, Joni Mitchell and The Very Best In South African Music compilation. Music wasn’t as accessible as it is today; we relied on newspapers and other publications for the latest: releases, reviews, juice — and listened to CDs.
This playlist captures that journey, bringing together those old cherished moments from the past with the present day. It’s a soundtrack for daily news and entertainment, with a song for every occasion and mood.
