What do you get when you throw a family run restaurant, a cooking competition and a church heist into a blender? A wild ride called Loved Out, the fierce, funny and unapologetically female-led film set to light up South African cinemas this spring.
From the award-winning creatives at Ndiani Studios and Tenye Creates, and helmed by Children’s Emmy-nominated powerhouse Tendayi Nyeke, Loved Out stars Bahumi Mhlongo as Ruva, a wannabe culinary mogul with big dreams and bigger problems, and Khabonina Qubeka as Gloria, her scandal-prone, spice-tongued mom.
The plot? Ruva’s crumbling restaurant gets a last shot at success when a viral cooking contest promises a R1m prize. When Gloria is kidnapped over church money that may or may not belong to a gangster syndicate, Ruva has one week to fake, finesse and filter her way to the cash, or lose her mom for good.
Backed by a cast including Tumi Morake, Marcus Mabusela and Eliazer Shadung and featuring a soundtrack with a Grammy-winning track from Brian Soko, Loved Out is a mash-up of comedy, chaos and culture.
Visually electric and emotionally raw, the film tackles everything from Insta-influencer life and toxic friendships to family secrets and faith. Think Bridesmaids meets Rye Lane, but with amapiano, Afro-glam and Joburg heat.
