Musician and producer Lebo M is set to commemorate the life and legacy of the late Joseph Shabalala, founder of the internationally acclaimed Ladysmith Black Mambazo, with a tribute concert at the Durban Playhouse on September 24.
The concert, which promises to be a moving celebration of Joseph’s musical genius, will feature a powerhouse line-up including Minnie Dlamini, Nkosinathi Shabalala, Boity, Khuzani and Big Zulu, with surprise guests.
Speaking to TshisaLIVE, Lebo M referred to his motivation for the tribute, saying the country is yet to fully acknowledge Joseph’s immense contribution to the local and global music scenes.
“In my view, Joseph Shabalala is the greatest musician we've exported and his credentials can be traced to this day. Such artists paved the way for many into the international music market, so there's no better way to celebrate him than through this concert.”
Joseph, who died in 2020, was best known for founding Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the Grammy-winning isicathamiya group that rose to global prominence through collaborations with artists such as Paul Simon. The group became a symbol of cultural pride and a shining example of South African musical excellence.
With the concert taking place on Heritage Day, Lebo M said the timing is especially symbolic.
“This is not just a tribute; it’s a national celebration of heritage, music and a legend who deserves his flowers.”
The event is expected to draw music lovers, industry legends and dignitaries, coming together to honour a man whose music continues to echo across generations.
