Alex FM’s Tshepo Mathari, aka Lord Aluta, is more than just a radio presenter — he’s a storyteller, community builder and rising voice in the South African media space.
In a sit-down interview with TshisaLIVE, the Weekend Drive Time host opened up about his radio roots, passion for youth mentorship and the legacy he hopes to leave behind.
After studying journalism, Lord Aluta got his start at YFM, writing bulletins for radio legends like Khanyi Magubane and McFarlane Moleli. But it was at Alex FM, which is celebrating it's 31st anniversary, where he truly found his voice.
“Alex FM is a magical place,” he says. “It’s where talent is nurtured and purpose is discovered.”
The name “Lord Aluta” is a personal tribute. “Lord” reflects his love for leadership and service. “Aluta” honours his late sister, who passed away in high school and loved the song Aluta Continua by Miriam Makeba. “Her spirit lives on in everything I do.”
In 2016, Lord Aluta founded Ten Influential Gentlemen, a mentorship initiative aimed at guiding young men in township communities.
“I grew up in a single-mother household. I understand the importance of mentorship, especially for the boy child,” he says.
Through workshops, radio content and business ventures like TEN MAG, his mentorship impact is growing and going digital.
He credits DJ Fresh, Unathi Nkayi and Thomas Msengana as early influences and believes radio remains powerful in shaping minds.
“Radio isn’t just about entertainment,” he says. “It’s a platform for purpose.”
With a memoir in the works and eyes set on expanding into Sunday Soul & R&B radio, Lord Aluta shows no signs of slowing down.
“I want to leave a legacy of impact,” he says. “One where entertainment and empowerment go hand in hand.”
