The State Theatre, under the leadership of artistic director Aubrey Sekhabi, is staging Music in the Air: The Musical. Running until September 28, the show is a tribute to the musical legends of the 1980s and 1990s who shaped the soul of a nation.

Written and directed by Joel Zuma, Music in the Air breathes new life into the songs that carried South Africans through some of the most turbulent chapters of the country’s history. From the sounds of Brenda Fassie and Lucky Dube to Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Chicco Twala, Letta Mbulu, Johnny Clegg, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and more, the production celebrates the artists whose music became the heartbeat of hope and unity during the struggle for freedom.

“The production celebrates the power of music to inspire, unite and heal,” said Joel. “The songs carried us through the most difficult times and remain part of who we are as South Africans.”

After its critically acclaimed debut at the Playhouse Drama Theatre in Durban in 2021, where it played to sold-out audiences and glowing reviews, the musical takes centre stage in Pretoria for a full season. A national tour is set to follow in 2026, with stops planned in Johannesburg, Durban and Pietermaritzburg.

Featured performers include Joel, Hlengiwe Lushaba-Madlala, Ntambo Rapatla, Thabile Mtshali, Sip Nkabinde, Sbusiso Shozi, Mbali Ngidi and Zodumo Shange.

“The State Theatre is proud to present Music in the Air: The Musical, a production that resonates deeply with our nation’s history and spirit. It is a celebration of our cultural icons and a reminder of the power of music to bring people together across generations,” said Aubrey.

Expect high-octane choreography, powerful storytelling and soul-stirring vocals as the cast brings to life the soundtrack of South Africa’s democratic journey. From the dusty streets of township life to the global stages conquered by the music icons, the production is as much a celebration as it is a commemoration.
