Two trucks caught alight after being involved in an accident with a bus near Montrose in the Free State early on Tuesday.

Anita Heyl from N3 Toll Route warned motorists that a road has been closed near Montrose, between Van Reenen and Harrismith.

“This follows an earlier crash involving a bus and two trucks. Both trucks caught alight but the fire has now been extinguished,” she said.

Traffic was stacked up in both directions but emergency services were working to reopen the lanes.

Progress was being made, Arrive Alive said. "Both directions of traffic are being accommodated using contraflow in the northbound lanes while cleanup and recovery operations continue. Road users are warned to continue to expect slow-moving traffic, congestion, and delays."

Four people lost their lives in the crash, which happened near the Kiesbeen and Swinburne intersection.

OFM News quoted Free State police spokesperson Mmako Mophiring as saying atruck driver and two passengers died on the scene. Another person succumbed to injuries while at the local hospital.
