Premature birth needn't be a big killer

Premature birth causes more than a million deaths globally each year‚ yet most of these babies could be saved. And‚ in South Africa‚ more than eight out of 100 babies are born before 37 weeks of pregnancy‚ according to the department of health. And about 25% of deaths of these newly born infants are caused by complications during birth.Tuesday is World Prematurity Day – a global initiative to raise awareness of deaths and disabilities caused by prematurity.The health department and the South African Civil Society for Women’s‚ Adolescents’ and Children’s Health aim to bring attention to programmes and measures that tackle prematurity.An event will be held on Monday‚ 16 November‚ at Kalafong Tertiary Provincial Hospital in Attridgeville from 9am to 2pm...
