University of Cape Town Professor Tim Noakes has weighed in on Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema’s weight loss and diet programme.

Julius Malema put on a lot of weight during his time at the top of the ANCYL. Left is Malema during his Cosas years, right is Malema when he was ANCYL president.

EFF national spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi confirmed that Malema has made a personal choice to join a gym so that he can be in rude health.

The world famous sports scientist said Malema was overweight because he is insulin resistant‚ he eats a high carbohydrates diet and drinks too many sweetened beverages.

“To lose weight successfully he needs to do a few things: Limit his carbohydrate intake to less than 25 grams per day; eat no sugar whatsoever and drink no sweetened beverages; eat no processed foods; hire a chef to cook foods only from our book Real Meal Revolution including only those foods on the Green List; eat a maximum of 2 meals a day; and practice intermittent fasting‚” said Noakes.

Noakes said that if the EFF leader does not follow strict dietary measures he is at risk of developing type two diabetes and related diseases including heart disease‚ cancer and dementia.

“Although this (risk) will only happen after he is 50 or so. Following this dietary advice will allow Mr Malema to be the 80kg hunk that he was in his matric year and at no risk of developing these diseases of insulin resistance‚” said Noakes.

Noakes said other politicians who are overweight should do the same (as should all overweight South Africans).

Noakes is a scientist‚ and an emeritus professor in the Division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine at the University of Cape Town.
