Winter in areas of the interior plateau is characterised by dry, sunny, crisp days and cold nights.

We are on the brink of excruciatingly cold nights and sunny - yet cold - days. I really dislike winter. It gradually creeps in, like a thief in the night.

Unfortunately, I can't run after summer by heading down to our warmer coastal regions.

I'm one of those bikers who had too good a time in the sun, ruining my leathers.

We need to do some shopping and, bearing in mind that riding gear is not cheap , some planning needs to come into play.

Where do we start?

Alpinestars has introduced a thermal undersuit specifically designed for motorcyclists .

Layering is essential when temperatures dip, and it's better to sweat than to bleed.

Have you ever been so cold that you've felt as though your ear has been torn to pieces?

A balaclava is a must and it fits very comfortably under your helmet.

Electric clothing adds a significant layer of complexity, as it requires an outlet to be added to your motorcycle - or a connection to be made directly to the battery.

When all else fails, it is hard to beat the heat created by electric elements such as vests, jackets, pants, and gloves.

If you choose to go electric, be sure to experiment with layering, since wearing electric clothing items against skin can cause burns.

Ever felt like your fingers have been slammed in a car door?

Cold hands are no laughing matter.

Inner gloves using the RapidFIRE Carbon Nano system heat up around the fingers and the back of the hand.

They have a five-position digital controller. The gloves, which are 95% polyester and 5% spandex, ensure a snug fit. They are available in four sizes, X-Small, Small/Medium, Large/X-large and XX-Large, and cost the same as regular motorcycling gloves.

ChillTex is an extraordinary material that is both tough and gentle.

Waterproof, windproof and breathable, it also has an insulating fleece lining, which is gentle on the skin.

ChillTex is used in Oxford Chill Out clothing to decrease the risk of wind chill or rain affecting the rider.

ChillTex Hydrocore has legendary properties as a breathable material, capable of wicking away more liquid from your skin than your body can produce.
