Trade unions were still in the dark over how Eskom planned to proceed with pay increase demands as talks between a labour mediator and representatives of the power utility continues.

Solidarity and the National Union of Mineworkers spokesmen said they were waiting to hear from the Commissioner for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration on how the matter would proceed.

The unions had expected to meet under the auspices of the CCMA on Monday, but, said Solidarity spokesman Dirk Hermann, the commissioner asked if he could have more time to speak to the Eskom negotiators.

The unions were hoping that Eskom would revise its eight percent wage offer. They were hoping for a 15 percent increase and R5000 housing allowance.

A deadlock had not yet been reached on Friday.

If the parties cannot agree, a strike could be on the cards - during winter and World Cup period.

The National Union of Metalworkers of SA is also participating in the negotiations.
