South African Airways is expanding its presence in central Africa and has started flying to Pointe Noire in the Congo.

It began on January 26 .

This addition to the airline's ever-expanding route network on the continent offers its customers further access into central Africa. It now operates in 21 cities on the continent, which has 55 countries.

Pointe Noire, the economic capital of the Congo, is the airline's fourth new destination on the continent for the 2011/12 financial year, joining Ndola (Zambia), Kigali (Rwanda) and Bujumbura (Burundi) as its most recent additions to its route network in Africa.

Pointe Noire is also the second-largest city in the Congo, after the capital Brazzaville and the main commercial centre. It is the centre of the oil industry and Congo is one of the main oil producers in central Africa.

The airline made a net profit of R782-million for the 2010-2011 financial year. Turnover increased by 6% to R18-billion.

Pointe Noire will be served twice a week with a narrow-body aircraft, the A319.
