Amazon.com Inc plans to open a branch of its cloud-based technology business in Johannesburg as the online retailer seeks to expand its customer base in Africa.

Amazon, based in Seattle, will employ about 250 people in South Africa, after adding the Johannesburg office to its service center set up in Cape Town in 2004, Steve Midgley, head of Amazon Web Services in Europe, Middle East and Africa, said in an e-mailed statement.

The new office shows “the investment we are making to support cloud adoption around the world,” Midgley said. “We intend to further accelerate the growth of our cloud customers in Africa and around the globe.”
