Is it a book or a games console? People asked that about the original Nintendo DS Lite, a small gaming device that, if turned sideways, could be used to play brain games.

It might've been that the adverts that inspired this question involved Nicole Kidman playing Dr Kawashima's Brain Training, a game that sold 20 million copies.

The new DSi XL could much more easily be mistaken for a book: it's larger, and has two screens which, at 4.2 inches (10.5cm) each, are larger than the DS Lite's 3 inches. It also has a built-in camera, and one card gives you some classic titles so that you can use the DSi XL as a book.

Of course, there are two new Mario games - New Super Mario Bros and Mario Kart - and a number of fresh games that take advantage of the new, larger pen-like stylus. The Nintendo DSi XL retails for R2100.
