Israel, Nigeria or Bahrain may end up owning two high-powered boats built to protect the South African coastline.

Representatives of various governments around the world have shown an interest in purchasing the police patrol vessels after the company, Eraco Boat Builders, that won a multimillion-rand tender from the SAPS to build them, went bust.

After Eraco applied to have itself liquidated, the joint liquidators gave instructions to have two, semi-completed, 16m aluminium patrol vessels auctioned.

Andrew Koch, managing director of the ClareMart Auction Group, said the two vessels will go under the hammer on Wednesday.

"Marine brokers and agents acting for governments such as Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Israel, the US and Nigeria have been in touch and all have expressed interest. We expect serious bidding on the auction day with between 25 to 30 bidders," said Koch.
