Opening today is the decor and interior design event, Decorex Joburg 2010, themed "Breath of Fresh Air".

The collection of 650 exhibitors focuses on innovation and new product lines that should keep trend-spotting visitors interested.

The design ideas are in keeping with global trends which have been shaped by the economic crisis and also by environmental awareness.

Claire Slater, general manager of exhibitions and events, says: "Opulence and glamour made way for a new form of decor sobriety: getting by with what we have, topping it with inventiveness and a sense of humour.

"Add some fantasy and eco-caring to the mix and the result is a dynamic, eclectic look - hailed by many as the decor style of the 21st century."

The event has been described as a role model for green living.

The management has aimed at making it a zero waste event, from reducing packaging and re-using materials, such as banners, to eco-friendly printing and re-imagining green breathing spaces throughout the exhibition, Melanie Robinson of Decorex explains.

One of the attractions, Plascon Living Green House, focuses on sustainability, mindful green living and eco-solutions.
