Then after carefully driving around Hippo dam, observing a couple of mom and dad hippos with a cute baby in tow, we came upon a truly magnificent cheetah. H e had been isolated by his three cousins, who had attacked him. He was pacing hungrily and was desperate to feed on a wildebeest leg.

On Saturday morning, we passed the hospital, which served the wounded in the Battle of Elandslaagte in which 250 Boers and 41 English died.

We saw an abandoned Zulu village complete with a bottle of sangoma's muti.

Suddenly the walkie-talkies were buzzing. We were quickly driven to where a male lion lay comfortably among the scrub. He rose nonchalantly, pawed the ground briefly, sat down and glanced at us in a slightly bored fashion.
