It's amazing to see thousands of people, some wearing high heels, some in bikinis, some in extravagant carnival- inspired feathers and headdresses, sequins and latex, some bare chested and brawny - and that's just the men - converging on the sports fields at Johannesburg's Zoo Lake.

I know this because I attended last year's Joburg Pride, which was a festival of fun, music and HIV/Aids awareness. This year the riot of colour that reflects our rainbow nation will again fly on the gay pride flag, which will be proudly held aloft by revellers as they march, dance and teeter from Zoo Lake, through Rosebank and back.

Joburg Pride is the largest and longest-running gay and lesbian event on the continent, and will be celebrating its 21st birthday tomorrow with a pertinent theme that aims to highlight the deteriorating human rights landscape for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people across Africa.

"The theme 'We're All African' is a call for LGBT Africans to affirm and assert their African-ness," says Joburg Pride co-chair Zak Mbhele.

"Sexual diversity is a normal aspect of the human spectrum and we want this to be accepted on the continent as part of its rich tapestry of cultural, religious, ethnic and linguistic diversity."

"We're All African" Joburg Pride 2010, featuring outrageous floats and thousands of supporters, will congregate at Zoo Lake Sports Club at 10am tomorrow and will travel through Rosebank, returning to Zoo Lake at 11.30am where festivities, including local musos and DJs and a teaser performance by British pop star and DJ Sonique, will continue until 5pm.

DJ Sonique will perform later with her dancers at the Official Joburg Pride after-party later that night at the Standard Bank Arena.

The gates at Zoo Lake Sports Club open at 8am. Entrance is free, and the whole family is invited.
