The Durban Hindu temple - which has been visited by celebrities such as Bollywood star Preity Zinta and Indian businesswoman Nita Ambani - will hold the ceremony to consecrate its new Hindu deities and the recently added satellite shrines.

This will be the second time the ceremony has been carried out since the temple was founded in 1898. It has undergone several additions and renovations in recent times, including the building of six satellite shrines for various deities.

"The original temple is still very much intact," said temple chairman Rhinesh Misra. "A lot of the deities are the originals that were consecrated 114 years back."

The temple was founded by indentured labourers who worked at the Durban Corporation and were housed at the Railway and Magazine Barracks.

Devotee numbers fell when the apartheid government enforced the Group Areas Act, which saw them moved out of the area.

The life-giving ceremony, to be held from June 21 for four days, will include collecting water from a well, bathing and dressing the deities, a chariot procession and taking of prayer goods out to sea in a boat.

Temple authorities will also publish a brochure documenting the temple's history. At least 3000 copies will be distributed free at the event.
