This week saw the launch of StreetSmartSA in Johannesburg.

The non-profit organisation dedicated to the social integration and upliftment of street children has been operating in Cape Town since 2005. Under the patronage of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, StreetSmart has raised more than R6-million towards rebuilding the lives of children at risk in the city.

Funds are raised by adding a voluntary R5 donation to each table's bill at participating restaurants. "A R5 donation to StreetSmart every time we eat in a restaurant can change the life of a child," said Joanne Evans, chairwoman of the Joburg StreetSmartSA committee.

The beneficiary selected for StreetSmart Johannesburg is Twilight Children, which works to provide children and young adults with the skills they need to join mainstream society.

The first six Johannesburg restaurants to join the initiative are DW-eleven-13, Five Hundred at The Saxon, Qunu at The Saxon, Balata at The Fairway Hotel & Golf Resort, The Griffen Gastropub, and Red Rabbit.

"StreetSmart is such a great and easy concept to do good. I hope we can sign up more and more restaurants to join in this initiative," said Nils Heckscher, chairman of the StreetSmartSA Board.
