I have never been a fan of late-night movies. Considering the length of Bollywood films, there is always a chance of fatigue creeping in.

Gunday (The Outlaws) 9/10

However, a movie such as Gunday kicks off with such a bang that you are immediately rejuvenated - and ready for this mind-blowing offering.

It is a brilliant film from Yash Raj Pictures. The story and direction are meticulously handled by Ali Abbas Zafar, who changes tack from the light-hearted Mere Brother Ki Dulhan to a more ruthless and action-packed blockbuster.

Set in the '70s, the story traces the friendship between two orphans, Bikram (Ranveer Singh) and Bala (Arjun Kapoor), who become best friends at a refugee camp.

Their bond is cemented through an identity crisis that forces them to transform from gun carriers to coal bandits and, eventually, black-market kings in Kolkata.

Their friendship undergoes a few challenges when they both fall in love with beautiful cabaret dancer Nandita (Priyanka Chopra), and the arrival of a new police commissioner also proves to be an obstacle.

Although the story at the outset may seem predictable, the makers have provided a roller-coaster journey that stays clear of clichéd paths. Zafar delivers a top-notch movie that is beautifully crafted and features action, romance, fun, male bonding, and some powerful and credible twists.

The lead stars are fantastic in their roles, and the characters of Bikram and Bala bring back memories of Jai and Veeru from Sholay. It is the manner in which their friendship is maturely handled that makes the performances stand out.

Singh and Kapoor are perfectly paired in this movie, and their strong off-screen friendship comes to life in electrifying style on screen.

Together, they are an explosive combination in strong roles.

It would be foolish to assume that Chopra is only part of the movie to tantalise the outlaws and serve as eye candy. Not only does she look stunning, but she is the surprise package - with an enchanting performance - as she triggers the drama.

Gunday is an explosive and entertaining movie that should go down as one of the better releases of the year.

These outlaws will surely rule the box office.
